Carpet Cleaning Myths

Posted on October 30, 2009

There are a number of myths you may have heard about carpet cleaning and how to do it. We will try and dispel some of those myths and give you more information about what to look for in a carpet cleaning company. You may have heard your friends or family saying that you should wit to have your carpet cleaned the first time, because it will never look the same again. This simply isn’t true. As long as you hire a trained professional you carpet should look better each time it gets cleaned. Waiting will only cause a health hazard and make the job harder when you do decide to get it done.

If you think that cleaning your carpet will shrink it you may be right, but the only way this will happen is if the carpet is left extremely wet after cleaning. Be sure to check the dampness of the carpet prior to your carpet cleaners leaving. This will ensure that your carpet does not shrink.

Another myth that we come across a lot is that regular vacuuming will deteriorate your carpet. This also isn’t true. Studies have shown that vacuuming your carpet four times a week does no more damage to the carpet fibres than vacuuming it twice a month. It is important to vacuum regularly because this will get  rid of any dust or dirt that may effect your health.

The myth that says you only have to clean your carpet if it has been stained also isn’t true. It is important, especially if you have small children in the house to have your carpet cleaned at least once a year. This will take away any deep down dirt that you can’t get out by just vacuuming.

Just because you may have been told that your carpet has a built in stain resistor does not mean that you shouldn’t have your carpet cleaned regularly. An all around carpet cleaning is a good way of maintaining an investment like a carpet. You cannot clean a carpet too much. The more often that a carpet gets a good thorough cleaning the longer it will last and the more you will get out of your initial investment.

If you believe, as many do, that carpet cleaning will ruin your stain resistance then you should know that foot traffic is much more likely to wear off the stain resistance in your carpet. You should however have the stain resistor re-applied about every third time you have your carpet cleaned. A professional carpet cleaner will be able to do this quite easily.

Many hardware and grocery store sell carpet cleaners at a pretty cheap price. It is easy to fall into the trap of wanting to save money when it comes to carpet cleaning. Harsh chemicals applied to your carpeting can ruin a carpet or leave it worse off than when your started. It is better to avoid the price and hassle of having to buy a new carpet because it was cleaned wrong. A professional will know exactly what type of cleaner should be used for your carpet and will do a professional job. Carpet cleaning is something that should be left to a professional.

You may have a carpet cleaner at home that you use for spot cleaning or the occasional all around cleaning job. These machines can be good for maintaining a carpet, but it is important to have your carpet cleaned by a professional occasionally too. Professional machines have much higher suction and will be able to remove dirt that has been trapped deep down. A professional can leave your you carpet looking brand new.
